A good jacket can last for years – but only if you take proper care of it. One of the most effective ways to extend its life is by waterproofing it. Waterproofing protects the fabric from rain, dirt, and wear, helping your jacket maintain both its performance and appearance. But which type should you choose, and how do you apply it correctly? Here’s a guide to understanding the different options and finding the one that suits your jacket best.

What Is Waterproofing – and Why Does It Matter?

Waterproofing is a treatment that makes fabrics water-repellent. It doesn’t make the material completely waterproof, but it helps water bead up and roll off instead of soaking in. This keeps you drier for longer and helps the fabric stay breathable.

Over time, the waterproof coating wears off – especially through washing, use, and exposure to sunlight and dirt. That’s why you need to reapply it regularly, usually once or twice a year depending on how often you wear the jacket. A clear sign that it’s time for a new treatment is when water no longer beads on the surface but starts to soak into the fabric.

Know Your Jacket’s Material

Before choosing a waterproofing product, it’s important to know what your jacket is made of. Different materials require different treatments.

  • Shell and rain jackets with membranes such as Gore-Tex or eVent need a waterproofing product that preserves breathability. Choose a PFC-free spray or wash designed for technical fabrics.
  • Softshell jackets often have a light water-repellent finish that can be restored with a spray-on treatment.
  • Down jackets need a special waterproofing product that protects both the outer fabric and the down filling without causing clumping.
  • Cotton and waxed jackets shouldn’t be treated with standard waterproofing products – they need to be rewaxed using beeswax or a paraffin-based wax.

Always check the care label before you start – it tells you what the material can handle.

Spray, Wash or Wax – Which Should You Choose?

There are three main types of waterproofing, each with its own advantages.

Spray-On Waterproofing

Spray treatments are the most versatile and suitable for most jackets. They’re applied directly to clean, dry fabric and create an even coating. The benefit is that you can target specific areas that get the most wear, such as shoulders and sleeves. Sprays are especially good for jackets with membranes, as they don’t affect breathability.

Wash-In Waterproofing

This type is added to the washing machine and distributes itself evenly across the jacket. It’s quick and convenient, but it can sometimes reduce breathability if the product isn’t designed for technical materials. Only use wash-in waterproofing if the manufacturer recommends it for your jacket type.

Wax

Wax is mainly used for cotton or canvas jackets, such as traditional outdoor or country-style coats. The wax is melted into the fabric using a hairdryer or iron, creating a tough, almost waterproof surface. The trade-off is that the fabric becomes heavier and less breathable.

How to Do It – Step by Step

  1. Clean the jacket first. Remove dirt and old waterproofing residues with a mild detergent designed for technical fabrics.
  2. Apply the waterproofing. Use spray, wash, or wax depending on the material. Always follow the product instructions carefully.
  3. Activate the treatment. Many products need heat to bond to the fabric. You can do this by tumble-drying on a low setting or gently ironing with a cloth in between.
  4. Test the result. Sprinkle a few drops of water on the surface – if they bead up and roll off, your jacket is ready for the next rainy day.

Eco-Friendly Alternatives

In the past, many waterproofing products contained fluorocarbons (PFCs), which are harmful to the environment. Fortunately, there are now plenty of PFC-free alternatives that offer nearly the same performance. These are often based on natural waxes or silicone and are a great choice if you want to protect both your jacket and the planet.

When shopping for waterproofing products, look for eco-labels such as bluesign® or OEKO-TEX®, which indicate that the product is free from harmful chemicals.

How Often Should You Reapply?

There’s no strict rule, but as a general guideline, you should reapply waterproofing:

  • After every 2–3 washes
  • When water stops beading on the surface
  • After a season of heavy use, rain, or sun exposure

If you wear your jacket daily, you may need to reapply more often. For occasional use, once a year is usually enough.

A Small Effort with a Big Impact

Waterproofing is a simple way to extend your jacket’s lifespan and keep it performing at its best. It only takes a few minutes but makes a big difference in comfort and durability. With the right type and proper application, you can ensure your jacket keeps you dry and protected – season after season.
