A brooch can be a small piece of art – a piece of jewellery that expresses personal style and often carries sentimental value. Over time, however, dust, skin oils and general wear can dull its shine. The good news is that you can clean it at home, as long as you do so carefully and according to its material. Here’s a guide to help you restore your brooch’s sparkle while keeping it safe for years to come.

Start by Identifying the Material

Before you begin, take a close look at what your brooch is made of. Many brooches combine metals, gemstones, enamel or pearls, and each material needs its own approach. Look for hallmarks (for example, 925 for sterling silver or 375 for 9-carat gold) and check whether any parts are glued or particularly delicate. If you’re unsure, always choose the gentlest cleaning method.

Silver Brooches – Remove Tarnish Carefully

Silver naturally tarnishes when exposed to air and moisture. To clean a silver brooch:

  • Soak it briefly in lukewarm water with a drop of mild washing-up liquid.
  • Gently brush with a soft toothbrush.
  • Rinse in clean water and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.

Avoid silver dips or chemical cleaners if your brooch includes stones or pearls, as these can be damaged. For heavier tarnish, use a silver polishing cloth – but only on the plain metal areas.

Gold Brooches – Keep the Shine Without Scratches

Gold is more resistant than silver but can still lose its lustre from oils and dust. Clean it with warm water and a little mild detergent. Use a soft cloth or a small brush to reach crevices, then rinse and dry gently. Avoid toothpaste or abrasive cleaners – they can scratch the surface.

If your brooch features gemstones, take extra care. Some stones, such as opals and emeralds, are sensitive to heat and chemicals. In these cases, simply wipe with a damp cloth and dry immediately.

Enamel and Ceramic Brooches – Avoid Moisture in the Cracks

Enamel brooches are often colourful and delicate. Too much moisture can cause damage, so wipe the surface with a slightly damp microfibre cloth and use a cotton bud to remove dirt from edges. Never soak enamel or ceramic pieces, as water can loosen glue or cause cracks.

Brooches with Pearls or Fabric – Dry Cleaning Only

Pearls, fabric and feathers require special care. Use a dry, soft cloth or a small brush to remove dust. If there are marks, gently dab with a barely damp cloth, but avoid rubbing. Pearls can lose their natural sheen if exposed to water or soap, so keep cleaning to a minimum.

Vintage Brooches – Handle with Extra Care

Older brooches may have fragile clasps, glued stones or a patina that adds to their charm. Avoid liquids altogether and stick to a dry cloth or soft brush. If you’re uncertain, it’s best to have the piece professionally cleaned by a jeweller.

Storage – Prevent Tarnish and Damage

Once your brooch is clean, proper storage will help maintain its condition. Keep it in a dry jewellery box or pouch lined with soft fabric. Avoid direct sunlight and damp places such as bathrooms. If you own several brooches, store them separately to prevent scratches.

A simple tip: place a small piece of chalk or a silica gel sachet in your jewellery box – it absorbs moisture and helps prevent tarnish.

Gentle Cleaning Preserves Beauty and History

A brooch is often more than just an accessory – it can be a keepsake, an heirloom or a reflection of your personality. By cleaning it with care and respect for its materials, you can preserve both its beauty and its story. It doesn’t take much – just a little knowledge and a gentle touch.
